Perforated Screen

Design Team: Gensler Los Angeles

Santiago, Chile : 2016
A core and shell office building in the heart of the city this project has a prime location next to an adjacent park. The project desired to incorporate exterior terraces facing the park as part of an amenity to the tenants. Due to the projects orientation this design feature has a high exposure to direct sunlight in the afternoon. To mitigate this condition a unified perforated metal screen was envisioned to shade the terraces and the building while still providing excellent views out to the surrounding landscape. Computational methods were employed to analyze the effect of the screen on total solar radiation, glare, temperature and views. An evolutionary solver was employed to further refine the facade and optimize the final solution for the criteria identified above as well as for cost and constructability.
