The developer for a spec office building about a mile inland from California’s sunny coast had the desire to add exterior balconies to the building to increase revenue and brand identity. The problem, these balconies faced due south meaning the exterior spaces would be unbearable to occupy in the scorching California sun. This study leverages computational design to synthesize climate data and rapidly generate studies for a solar shade to screen the balconies and the building façade. Over the course of several weeks several dozen types of screens were generated, tested and analyzed to find the solution best fitting the performance and budget needs of the project.
